*Rural: pertaining to the area outside the larger and moderate-sized cities and surrounding population concentrations. Generally characterized by farms, ranches, small towns and unpopulated regions. Compare "suburb".
Example: Garrison grew up on a farm in a rural area of Indiana. She later moved to Chicago and lived in a suburban town nearby. Garrison invested in rural land, hoping to be able to return at retirement.
